Tentacle Rape Roundup

When I began this post months ago BSD was back on the front page of Google's Tentacle Rape results and clocking in at number 9. We're since gone again.  With some of our former slimy glory gone here's my attempt to reclaim what's been lost. (As always my tentacle interaction is tainted with some Lovecraft lovin' so please forgive any variations in the follow.)

Before the future of BSDs Tentacle Rape is taken any further I'd like to give you a brief history of Tentacle Rape.  In the 1820s Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai produced an erotic woodcut called The Dream of the Fisherman's Wife.  In it a woman is sexually taken by two octopi, a larger and smaller.  Not until years later would Tentacle Erotica reemerge in Japanese culture.

The Dream of the Fisherman's Wife

In 1987 in an attempt to dodge Japanese pornography laws which prohibited the depiction of animated phalluses Toshio Maeda created the tentacle rape monster.  (Similar laws brought about the creation of Bukkake in Japanese porno as well.)  No phalluses, just tentacles.  This new incarnation of tentacle rape premiered in Urotsukidoji and quickly found a cult following.

In the 90s and 00s with the advent of the internet there was a dual flood of Anime among it and friendless teenagers alike.  Two things Matt and I have spent a lot of time with.  We were fated to come into contact with TR eventually, and reluctantly we did.  Now with everything up to speed on tot he round-up!

Someone at Threadless Tees combined what BSD most likes (SciFi) with what it most hates (T-shirts?) to illustrate the danger of sending octopuses into space

I was surprised and delighted when I saw that Jones Soda made a Barack Obama flavored pop.  I was less delighted and much more shocked when I saw that Mnemosyne made a Tentacle Grape flavored pop.

SomethingAwful.com' Photoshop Phriday are working to make sure even Tentacle's are conscious and aware of safer sex habits.  Introducing the Rape-Tentacle Strength Condom!

Artist Rune Olsen may have accidently created one of the most impressive and beautiful works of Tentacle Rape since The Dream of the Fisherman's Wife.

Some things should never exist.  Like this, the complete works of HP. Lovcraft online.  Truly a horror of unspeakable measure.

The Perry Bible Fellowship (one of the internets greatest webcomics) has a Cthulhu inspired strip that is just as scary and much more realistic than anything Lovecraft ever wrote.  All hair Zuthulu!

Until next time have a happy tentacle~

Cthulhu... I love you

Please add to the ranks of the gay film classics (The Bird Cage, The Crying Game, et cetera, et cetera)- Cthulhu: or Welcome Home to the End of the World (2008)

I first learned about this movie the same way I learn everything about Cthulhu, throught ambient noise, the only way anything Lovecraftian seems to travel. As if from the belly of some long lost god-creature my T.V. set, unaccompanied by my attentions, ran an ad for Here!- Gay Television on Demand .  And through the waves of radiation something in the Cthulhu center of my brain, along with my Gaydar, was triggered and I heard the call of the beast; the call of gay Cthulhu.

It'd seem that sometime in the sadly Dickianless movie making period of 07-08  a littl Lovecraft novella called "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" was adapted by the up-and-coming gay production company and cable channel Here!.  From what I understand the movie is a two way metaphor where the fear and pressure that Russ (the films gay protagonist) faces when returning home to his small-town roots in order to attend to his mothers estate is matched by the realization that his father is part of the Cult of Cthulhu, a cult that worships the greatest evil know in the universe, a large, flightless bird, generally found hibernating in the Pacific Ocean in the submerged ancient city of R'lyeh, who is most assuredly the sign of the end of days.  It's pretty scary stuff.

Now truth be told I haven't seen this movie, as of yet, so I cannot say for sure that Cthulhu is gay in this movie, or if it even makes an appearance at all.  But I'm hoping he does, and I'm hoping for some gay-tentacle love finally done tastefully.

PSA: National Coming out Day is October 11th.  Remember, you've got a friend in BSD.

T&R of the week

Like so much Lovecraftian fan fiction tentacles seem to haunt me everywhere I turn.   I am speaking of this-

~four inches tall, a vigintillion years old, googly eyed, tentacle clad, and tiny winged~

A seemingly cute Cthulhu which my mother for some odd reason was compelled (not by me I assure you) to create one afternoon. Maybe Lovecraft was right when he wrote about the Cthulu Cult and the strange call of its godmonster.  Is this the call of Cthulhu?

The Call of the Tentacle

It is no news to you dear reader that Matt and I think of ourselves as experts of some sorts on quit a few odd little things. And why shouldn’t we? One such subject that has recently become chief among our areas of expertise is that of ‘tentacle rape.’ We may not be well versed or particularly well experienced in ‘TR’ but it can not be denied that we, as a team, are more familiar and versed in the ins and outs of the act than any of you may be (however, if you would like to argue this point Matt and I would be more than eager to take it up with you).

It was in the spirit of ‘TR’ that I decided indulge myself in the work of an author I had long ago abandoned any consideration of ever reading: Mr. H. P. Lovecraft.

I will admit that I had many preconceived notions about Lovecraft’s work; I did not hold any of it in high opinion. Now though, after suffering through the insufferable, I see how right I always was. However, while all of my feelings about Lovecraft and Lovecraftian writing have been affirmed by reading a choice few of his short stories I’ve also gained some insight into the madness of (and attraction to) this prolific writer.

If you’re not familier with H. P. Lovcraft maybe I should fill you in a little bit and explain just how a thing like tentacle rape led me to him. Lovecraft can easily be described as a failed writer of what, in its time, was know simply as “weird fiction.” His works wove together elements of horror and science into a stories of troubled individuals dealing with cosmic terrors, daemons that were other worldly and personal insanities. Many of his short stories were originally published in pulp magazines such as Weird Tales where he gathered a small following of readers… In other words: ‘fail.’ It seems though that after his death in 1937 absurdity was not to be the final resting place for Lovecraftian canon. ("That is not dead which can eternal lie, And with strange aeons even death may die.") And then the internet happened and with it came the heyday of the meme. And things were good for the Lovecraft mythos. The internet offered to Lovecraft readers and fan writers the same thing it offered to every other fat middle aged man-child living in his parent back room, a place to met with other like himself to complain and praise anything and everything, from Mr. Plow, to Lovecrafts flagship creation, the monstrous god of mind sick legends- Cthulhu. Also, there was porn, loads of porn, and in these dregs of degradation poor men would stumble across the darkest thing the internet harbored within itself, a dangerous entity as remote and primal as any of Lovecraft’s creations…tentacle rape.

If you haven’t seen the connection yet here it comes. Lovecraft developed the Cthulhu mythos, a series of stories that dealt with a group of ancient monsters who would one day reappear to enslave the universe. Cthulhu, the heist deities among Lovecrafts pantheon of daemons, was an enormous, winged, taloned, mollusk encrusted, tentacled beast. A, if I may, tentacle monster.

"I'm going to rape your cheery ass"

But never mind all that. What’s far more interesting is the way in which these crazy ass stories read. Lovecraft writes with a care for language and detail which is near scientific. Many of the more thorough descriptions Lovecraft provides his reader with have a doctor’s attention to details, describing in full and sometimes over indulgent terms the situations and madness of what because of this elevated intellect of first person narration are characteristically bourgeois in their deepening states of insanity. Even so, the Lovecraft’s texts read as beautifully crafted and elegant stories…The problem is that words like “ooze” and “slime” sound very disconcerting when used by an author who before these failings has demonstrated an elevated command of the English language. Also, these types of descriptions are common and creep into the work very often. More over Lovecraft uses terms which are all together foreign to his reader and, for the most part, any reader. I can excuss this because in most circumstances it is done with the purpose of describing something which in the contect of the story is forign to the protagonist, like the sunken city of R’lyeh in Dagon and The Call of Cthulhu. For an author who is so well endowed with adjectives sing words like “ooze” sounds childish, even infantile, characterizing a setting as being “cyclopean” (admittedly Lovecraft also describes settings as being “non-euclidean” which is much helpful for the reader) is mysteriously lazy.

Much of Lovecraft’s writing seems to be in the form of journals and first person accounts of these weird and ominous happenings. The sense of narration and the use of language and detail is reminiscent of many gothic writers. In the end Lovecraft reads much like a hybrid, with touches of Poe’s dark and brooding Victorian style of language mixed with a type of story telling much like that of Arthur Conan Doyle’s. The man isn’t an incredibly bad writer, he’s actually a pretty alright (I’m hesitant to say good) writer, it’s just that, you see, he’s bat shit insane. What Lovecraft did for literature might not seem that big and important, and I’m sure someone else would have done it if he hadn’t but the point remains he was the first to do it. H. P. Lovecraft wrote prolifically, as many failed writers have been seen to do, he developed a cult following after death, also not uncommon. What he did do different from other writers like him (writers of horror, adventure, and science fiction) was reveal to the reader the insignificance of his protagonists in the greater scheme of things. Lovecraft’s characters are merely tools for larger stories, disposable unimportant human life that he used for perspective into an unknown threat of cosmic monstrosity.

I read Lovecraft because I knew that I could not in good conscience knock the man any longer with out sitting down and giving him a chance. It’s good to know you enemy I guess is what I was thinking. But it’s different then all that know. I’m glad I have a bit more insight into the fucked up stupid world of H. P. Lovercraft and his fucked up stupid followers. I mean shit, there are Cthulhu/Lovecraft “Scholars” out there who are unembarrassed to put that in their resumes. I’m not saying they shouldn’t be ashamed of themselves, because they should. But I’ll admit that if I had time to kill, and nothing better to read with more literary weight, I’d read some more of it. In the end is was kind of fun to read and grind my teeth through. Anyways, as I said, it isn’t completely horrible.

God this man is shit fuck ugly

Water Water Everywhere and-

HOLY SHIT look at all those tentacle monsters!

If you've ever wondered what tentacle monsters are or what exactly it is Matt and I are always talking about, this should give you a better idea.  What this picture is actually meant to be though is an HIV/AIDS awareness and protection poster.  It's brought to you by the artist James Jean.

A Moment in the Sun: Tentacle Rape

Maybe it is a delusion of grandeur, maybe it is all mistake, but BSD has finally reached the pinnacle of internetdom. After a year of working out fingers to the bone and climbing, we have finally reached the google main page for something other than "blast shields" or "caleb michael".

Yes, folks... that's right... we're the number four google search result for "tentacle rape".

Since we always seek to please our readers, we here at BSD would like to announce a new segment, called Tentacle Rape Corner, where we will be discussing all sorts of things tentacle related... both rape and yes, consensual sex... with tentacles involved, of course. We will also be working on other squid/octopus related subjects and are trying to hammer out an agreement with some Krakens for photo ops. Anyway... I hope you enjoy.

Tentacle Rape

Oh boy... this is going to attract some weird visitors. C'est la vie...

You know that weird girl you went to High School with? The one you always felt kinda bad for until you realized that there was a good reason why no one talked to her? It’s not that she was a bad person, she was just too weird to have any sort of conversation with. Now, I know this seems like the pot calling the kettle black. Hey, I’m not going to deny I’m weird, strange, crazy, dorky, whatever… I embrace it. I just wrote a piece about Aquaman and Black Manta where I used the phrase “doinking mermaids and playing Marco Polo with dolphins”. I get that, I accept that, but I know how to interact with others, most people like me. And if anything, my own weirdness should underscore just how strange that girl is… because, I’m sure most of you know a person like that, but…

Have you ever had a conversation with her about tentacle rape?

Just process that for a few moments. Tentacle rape… weird Japanese Manga about girls… being raped… by tentacle monsters. It’s like that urban legend about Led Zeppelin fucking some girl with a fish, but about four trillion times worse. It’s not that the concept really even bothers me all that much. Sure, it’s weird and disturbing and disgusting, but I’ve seen worse. But to have a conversation about it… with that weird girl… in the middle of class was the most awkward moment of my life.

It all happened one sunny day in history. I was headed to the back of the room so I could plug in my laptop and entrench myself for the three hours of history lecture and discussion that were to follow. I pass by this girl and I’m almost to my seat when I hear my name. Fuck. I had thought I’d gotten through scotch free, but apparently not. Considering I’d been ignorning her pretty well that semester, I felt like I should go see what she wanted. It was quite possibly the worst mistake of my life.

“Do you know about tentacle rape?” she asks me as she looks up at my with squinty eyes.

I stop in my tracks, stare down at her and wonder if I’d fallen down the rabbit hole. “Um… yeah?” I answer, trying to figure out where on earth this could possibly be going and where she learned about humanity from.

She launches into some long spiel about anime and manga, Japan and art and of course tentacle rape (which she doesn’t like, just so you know, but only reads it because the art is good), and a whole slew of other topics that went in one ear and floated off somewhere, probably killing some kittens when their vile forms finally found something good they could destroy.

I stood there horrified, as if in Medusa’s gaze, wondering what was going on upon the page of that “book”… it was like something out of H.P. Lovecraft’s worst nightmares. It was some sort of demon Kraken, as if Cthullu vomited slimy green vines and decided to attack a school full of Japanese vaginas with it.

I understand sexuality comes in all sorts of forms, and I’ve been known to be attracted to fictional things… be them aliens or robots or whatever, but they’re always at least humanoid. But to be attracted by some human, Godzilla-like squid monster that formed from the radiation after Hiroshima? That, I just don’t understand…

But, I just nodded along, agreed with her that tentacle rape was weird and when the torture was finally over I returned to my seat, convinced she was an alien, because the entire conversation just could not have come from a human being.
